Superfine Alpaca

Alpaca fiber is warm, lightweight, and pleasantly soft. Alpaca fibers are classified and named according to their coarseness. The thinner the alpaca fiber, the finer its properties become when spun into yarn. Superfine Alpaca is most commonly used in the textile industry. Finer (=thinner) fibers than Superfine Alpaca are Baby Alpaca and Royal Alpaca. Royal Alpaca is the finest fiber available for industrial-scale garment production.

Alpaca fiber has exceptionally good thermal regulation properties. Due to the crimped structure of the fiber, air pockets are trapped between the fibers, acting as insulation. Alpaca fiber repels water and dirt, and does not absorb odors. The hypoallergenic and antibacterial fiber is also well-suited for those with sensitive skin.

The color shades we use in our collection mimic the natural shades of alpaca wool. The alpaca fiber used by Ruukin Kehräämö is dyed only if the specific color is not available undyed. Dyeing is always carried out under supervision, using safe and responsible Reach and GOTS certified methods.

The Superfine Alpaca fiber used by Ruukin Kehräämö is USDA organic-certified and is spun into yarn by Michell Group in Peru. The Responsible Alpaca Standard (RAS) certificate guarantees ethical alpaca farming and fair compensation for farmers.
