At the Heart of Ruukki Spinning Mill - Our Ten Pillars of Operation

1. Expertise

Our entire operation is based on strong expertise and a desire to increase the appreciation of natural fibers, especially alpaca wool. Our know-how is grounded in over 30 years of experience with alpacas as well as international, scientific research evidence related to them. Breeding alpacas, processing alpaca fiber, and running a spinning mill have made us comprehensive experts in our field.

Our small-scale spinning mill operations began in 2012 and continued until the autumn of 2023, when we sold our spinning equipment. We are still consulted for advice by educational institutions as well as many entrepreneurs operating in the industry. Our expertise is reflected in the quality of our products and our customer service. Our most important goal is a satisfied user of our products.

2. Transparency

In the summer of 2024, an external, independent third-party sustainability assessment was conducted for Ruukin Kehräämö's Alpaca Royal collection by Infine Oy. The sustainability assessment is updated annually. We stand behind our operations and products, and we keep our promises. We do our work with our whole hearts and believe that authenticity and openness create more of the same, and both are values that the modern world needs.

3. Naturalness

Alpaca fiber is a biodegradable, renewable natural fiber. Alpacas are raised in Peru mainly on the high pastures of the Andes, which are characterized by harsh climatic conditions and limited opportunities for other agricultural production (Kern et al., 2026). Alpacas have soft pads instead of hooves, which means that their grazing puts less strain on the soil surface and vegetation on average than the grazing of hoofed animals. When grazing, alpacas consume vegetation without pulling up plants by the roots, which helps to preserve the pasture's vegetation. (Pilarczyk et al., 2025.)

The Royal-quality alpaca fiber used by Ruukin Kehräämö is naturally very fine and soft. The raw fiber is washed and, in most cases, dyed as part of the normal fiber processing procedure, but it does not need to be softened with extra chemical treatments like, for example, sheep's wool fibers. The softness of Royal alpaca fiber is based primarily on the fineness, surface structure, and consistent quality of the fiber. The yarns we use have the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate.

4. Ethics

The well-being of both people and animals is important to us, and we have chosen as partners only those entities whose operating principles are in accordance with our requirements. We encourage the indigenous alpaca breeders of Peru in critical breeding work. For alpaca fiber that meets our quality requirements (Royal alpaca ≤ 18 µm), they receive better compensation than for coarser alpaca fibers, such as Baby alpaca (≤ 22 µm) or Superfine alpaca (≤ 24 µm). The yarns we use in our products have the Fair Trade Fair Trade Peru Good Practice certificate. The certificate guarantees that production adheres to strict social responsibility and environmental protection criteria, such as ethical working conditions and supply chain traceability.

5. Quality

Glued-on advertising slogans, exaggeration, and empty promises are not our thing. The best and most genuine proof of the quality of our products is a satisfied customer who returns for more purchases. Many of our customers have noted that after experiencing the quality of our products firsthand, they no longer want to wear anything other than Ruukin Kehräämö's alpaca wool clothing.

The transition away from disposable fashion requires more than just timeless design. It is only possible if the garment remains in good condition during use. Therefore, premium-quality material is a key issue for us. An alpaca knit made from Royal-quality fiber does not pill. It remains neat even with repeated use, and with small maintenance measures, you can make it a trusted friend for years to come.

The knits in our collection are assembled from pieces knitted to the final shape to minimize cutting waste. If necessary, a garment that has already been knitted can be unraveled back into yarn. The Royal-quality alpaca fiber we use is rare and valuable, and therefore it is important that no waste is created.

We operate in cooperation with our long-term, reliable partners. Our yarns are supplied by the Peruvian Michell Group, which has extensive experience in the further processing of top-quality alpaca fiber. Our Lithuanian partner workshop possesses solid professional skills, and the quality of their work meets our high standards.

Ruukin Kehräämö is the only Finnish company to which the international alpaca association IAA (International Alpaca Association) has awarded the prestigious Golden Alpaca label. This recognition, which guarantees top-tier quality, has been granted to only three clothing brands in Europe.

6. Timelessness

Responsible design plays a major role in producing a responsible garment. Ruukin Kehräämö's products are designed to be timeless in style and built to last. Since Royal-quality alpaca fiber is a material that stands the test of time and wear, the product's design must also support this principle.

Our products are very versatile, and the color palette is earthy and timeless. The designs have been carefully considered to suit many different body types and personalities, both men and women. We do not have seasonal collections; instead, we have one classic clothing collection that is periodically replenished. We believe that timeless style is the most ecological style of all. 7. Softness

In addition to reflecting soft values in our operations, softness is also one of the most significant characteristics of our products.

The superior softness of the products in Ruukin Kehräämö's Alpaca Royal collection is due to the thin, long, and smooth-surfaced fiber structure of the Royal-quality alpaca fiber. The fiber does not have the clearly scaly surface typical of other wool fibers. The knit feels luxuriously soft against the skin, and this softness only increases with use.

Alpacas are bred to produce wool that is as thin and uniform as possible. The Royal alpaca fiber used in Ruukin Kehräämö's garments is rare, as only 10% of alpacas produce wool this fine. For this reason, every knit in the Alpaca Royal collection is effectively a rare collector's item.

Thanks to the fiber's good thermal regulation capability, knits in the Alpaca Royal collection do not need to be thick; they can be designed to be pleasantly thin and beautifully draped. The knits feel luxuriously soft against the skin—a genuine everyday luxury. Ruukin Kehräämö's knits are designed with warmth and expertise in Mathildedahl. Each of our knits is a carefully finished, unique product. You can see and feel this in the final result as well.

9. Effortlessness

The garments in Ruukin Kehräämö's Alpaca Royal collection are effortless to wear and easy to maintain. The densely crimped structure of Royal alpaca fiber makes the yarn elastic and light. Thanks to the elastic yarn, the knits hold their shape well. Any indentations or stretching can be easily smoothed out by steaming. High-quality Royal alpaca naturally repels dirt, moisture, and odors, and you can best care for the garment by airing it out regularly. The garment needs to be washed only very rarely. Stains should be removed locally, and when the garment needs a more thorough cleaning, it can be washed by hand or on the hand-wash cycle of a washing machine.

Knits in the Alpaca Royal collection remain neat for years to come. If your favorite knit gets damaged, our repair service will fix it. If an alpaca knit you bought from us has served you for so long that it can no longer be repaired, it will receive a new life through our recycling service.
