The Golden Alpaca brand is a guarantee of quality
Ruukin Kehräämö's long-term work in ecologically, socially, culturally, and economically sustainable alpaca fiber production has been recognized with the Golden Alpaca label awarded by the Peruvian International Alpaca Association (IAA). The organization has been operating since 1984, and over the years, 49 international companies have been accepted as members. The organization's mission is to provide the international market with high-quality, sustainably produced, and design-innovative alpaca products.
With the Golden Alpaca recognition, Ruukin Kehräämö has joined the ranks of internationally renowned companies known for their quality alpaca products. The group includes companies from countries such as Italy, Japan, and Australia. The label is awarded only to products made from 100% fiber of at least Baby alpaca grade.
In Finland, alpaca products are available with different fiber grades and percentages. The most commonly used is Superfine alpaca fiber, which is coarser than Baby alpaca. Ruukin Kehräämö’s products primarily use Royal-grade alpaca fiber, which is finer than Baby alpaca. The availability of such high-quality fiber is very limited, which is why large fashion retailers cannot offer products of a comparable quality level.
The alpaca originates from Peru, where 80% of the world's alpaca fiber is produced. 80% of Peru's alpaca farms are still smallholdings with fewer than 100 alpacas. Part of Ruukin Kehräämö's responsibility work is to support the indigenous people of Peru in alpaca breeding and in ensuring the ecological and ethical standards of alpaca fiber production. Ruukin Kehräämö's partners in Peru include the IAA and the research and breeding center Pacomarca.
Alpaca fiber is excellent for Finnish conditions as well, as it is lightweight, water- and dirt-repellent, and regulates body temperature. Products made from Royal-grade alpaca fiber are suitable for all ages, from babies to the elderly, because the fine alpaca fiber is naturally soft and hypoallergenic.
