Choosing a wool sock: when quality and comfort matter
Whether you're spending a relaxing evening at home on the sofa or going on an adventure in the rainy outdoors, the right pair of socks significantly affects the comfort of your experience. Alpaca wool socks from Ruukin Kehräämö are a quality-conscious choice, thanks to their comfort, excellent thermal insulation, lightness, and breathability. Alpaca socks are perfectly suited for cold and/or damp weather, and are even suitable for sensitive skin.
Ruukin Kehräämö’s alpaca wool socks are made from 80% Superfine alpaca fiber, with 15% polyamide added to improve durability. They also contain 5% elastane for an optimal fit. This provides our alpaca wool socks with the excellent functional qualities that our customers repeatedly praise.
1. Non-binding fit
Our basic alpaca wool socks are made from an ultra-soft terry knit. The cuff does not constrict, and our socks are also well-suited for feet prone to swelling. Our socks do not cause mechanical irritation, making them the perfect choice for long hikes, for example.
2. Shape retention
Our long knee-high alpaca socks are designed specifically for horseback riding, where the requirements for a good sock are highly varied. The sock does not slide down and holds its shape well. It doesn't need to be washed after every use, and it does not cause sweating. While the knee-high sock is especially well-suited for riding, it also works excellently as a dress sock or for air travel.
3. Thermal insulation
Alpaca fiber is known for its excellent thermal insulation. It is not just the fiber itself that insulates heat, but specifically the air trapped within the structure formed by the fibers. Stationary air is a poor conductor of heat, thus helping to reduce heat transfer between the body and the environment. Alpaca fibers also exhibit medullation, an internal core structure within the fiber, which has been suggested to contribute to the alpaca's high thermal insulation relative to the material's weight and in comparison to other wool fibers.
4. Water and dirt repellency
Alpaca wool naturally repels moisture and dirt. Ruukin Kehräämö’s alpaca socks feel warm even when damp.
5. Antibacterial properties
Alpaca wool naturally resists odors and bacteria. Due to their ability to repel moisture and dirt, as well as their antibacterial and odor-resistant properties, our alpaca socks rarely require washing.
6. Lightness
One of the special properties of alpaca fiber is the combination of warmth and lightness. Highly insulating products can be made from alpaca fiber without a heavy or thick feel. Thanks to their lightness, alpaca socks are an excellent choice for hikers and backpackers in particular.
